One and Only

Every client is my favorite client.

I’m not really a people person. If you imagine the most socially awkward mistake a person can make, I’ve probably done it - in a professional setting. Sometimes in front of a large group of people. Client site was the battlefield in which I had to learn how to speak and interact human.

It got especially tricky when I had to deal with different client teams on the same account that all had different opinions on what they wanted us to do - clients with competing priorities. Sometimes, I would find myself leaving the office of Client A after near-agreeing to build them a yacht (figuratively) and then immediately walk into the office of Client B and tell them that we’ll consider fulfilling their dream to build a train instead (also figuratively). There were points where we would even quantify everyone’s opinions and make a recommendation based on the opinion that got the biggest number.

Good times :)

A friend of mine who’s still at the firm I used to work at gave me the idea for this comic. It came at a good time, too. I had just run out of ideas after the first four comics and I was getting nervous that I wouldn’t come up with anything worth drawing about ever again. Imposter syndrome slapped me in the face. But a good hour stuck in a mall food court waiting for my family to finish an appointment gave me some space to come up with a good 50+ ideas. I guess I just needed to breathe and think it through. And a good nudge from a friend - thanks buddy!

Speaking of confidence boosts, I finally started some real art studies after 20+ years of running from them. Some of the first things I learned were how to draw realistic 3D forms - like cylinders. Thus, in the comic, I drew some cylinders. I’m very proud of them - the cylinders.

I’ve also learned a bit about dynamic gesture which I applied here. Comparing the dog from this comic and “Scope Creep”, I think I made a big leap. It’s only been a couple of weeks, but I hope what I learn will be helpful to the Super Mochi Team.

They need it.
